What Is Oral Pathology?

Identifying What's Changed

Oral pathology covers the diagnosis and treatment of abnormal growths, lesions, cysts, and other tissue changes in the mouth, jaw, and surrounding structures. Most findings turn out to be harmless, but any unusual change is worth having evaluated.

Catching something early — even if it's nothing serious — is always better than waiting and wondering.

When to Get It Checked?

Signs Worth a Second Look

A Sore That Won't Heal

Most mouth sores heal within a week or two. One that lingers longer than that is worth having examined.

White or Red Patches

Discolored patches on the gums, tongue, or inside of the cheek can sometimes signal a change worth investigating.

Unusual Lumps or Swelling

A new lump, bump, or area of swelling that doesn't go away on its own should be evaluated.

Persistent Pain or Numbness

Ongoing pain, tingling, or numbness in the mouth or jaw without an obvious cause is worth looking into.

What to Expect?

Evaluation & Diagnosis

Exam & Imaging

We take a close look at the area in question, using imaging if needed to understand what's going on beneath the surface.

Biopsy, If Needed

If something needs a closer look, we take a small tissue sample and send it to a lab for analysis. You're monitored continuously throughout for comfort and safety.

Diagnosis & Treatment Plan

Once results are back, we walk you through exactly what was found and the right next steps, whether that's removal, monitoring, or referral.
